bossymarmalade: iroh interrupted mid-noodles (oishinbo!)
In honor of All Hallow's Eve, I'm inviting trick-or-treaters to my 'door'. Comment "trick-or-treat" to this post and you will get a surprise in your 'bag' on the 31st. Treats can be anything you'd like - my bubbling cauldron can serve up pretty pictures, drabbles or ficlets, kittens, or random other things.

I think I'd like to do this! Feel free to leave prompts and I'll see if I can meet them!
bossymarmalade: hermes conrad with flapping tie (sweet something of somewhere!)
[personal profile] turps did this, and I thought hey I haven't done a meme in a while, so why not:

If you had to delete all but five of your fanworks, which five would you keep and why? (Or ten if you're more prolific.)

. run for yer life [the beatles] - if there was one single project that Lori and I agree is our complete and utter absolute pet baby favourite, it's this. Because this thing is the product of our entire fannish lives together, from when we were wee girls in Trinidad watching that god-awful Beatles cartoon to when we were teenagers hunting down cheap books about the group to now when we've discovered all the bounty of YouTube Beatles footage and can look at their drug use and breakup with grown-up, indulgent eyes. Plus, they are serial killers, because apparently that's how we show our love: plotting George Harrison the unrepentant murderer in a sunny kitchen while making breakfast one weekend, you know, the way sisters do.

. brains go great with aquavit [popslash - I've written a lot of popslash that's more, like, artsy and meaningful and whatnot, but this smush of travel memoir and Practical Magic rip-off holds a special place in my heart because writing it was so, so much fun and Beth beta'ed it for me, which is always a delightful experience (she is seriously the best editor EVER). Also I spontaneously decided to draw a crappy Venn diagram and use that as a punchline, and I'll stop there before I get bitchy, lol.

. keep your palms flat [futurama] - If I were ever going to podfic my own work (which won't happen b/c I suck COLOSSALLY at podficcing, I've been working on one for over a year), anyhow this would be the one I'd do, super-shitty character voices and all. Y'all don't even WANT to hear how bad my Zoidberg is. But the voices in the story sound like the show, and all in all it just makes me happy to have written it, because I can't believe at this point in fandom people will STILL read good Simpsons or Futurama fic and be like, "Whaaaaaa? Good, serious fic in this fandom? WHAAAAAAAAAAA?!?!?"

. three-part disharmony [homicide: life on the street] - This was the fandom where I wrote my first (fairly) sophisticated grown-up fics -- which of course seem so clunky and juvenile now when I go back and read them -- and allowed me a space to explore race/class/gender that comicfandom was ... not so hot on, back in the day. Anyhow, going back to that fandom after years of writing resulted in something that's much better than my earlier stuff and still felt so comforting and satisfying to write!

. to serve the gods [road to el dorado] - My little dark horse of a story, post-movie and focused on Chel. Like, what? I just remember watching the movie -- which I adore -- and realizing that I wanted to know more and see more, how in the world Chel could reconcile loving these two (lovable!) guys who basically heralded the genocide of her people. Plus, there's a lot going on with Chel in the movie that's only hinted at, so I always wondered. I'm not generally that type of fic-writer, I just like to write rambling silly things about food and pop culture, but one in a while I get one off that took more thought, heh.

Yay, everybody should do this meme!
bossymarmalade: jean grey as drawn by glockgal (hope you survive)
So handyhunter did this thing where she recast a bunch of Marvel characters with actors of colour, and [be warned, it's image-heavy!] wow, did I ever like that idea. ) Only the X-folks, though!

SO MUCH FUN. Everybody should do this! Or at least tell me who I should have cast as Wolverine!
bossymarmalade: kelly taylor & donna martin are judging you (no friend of mine would wear hypercolour)
. Have been bonking about on AO3, which is pretty neat. It's nice to have one Rilly Big Archive again, where you can go and search for whatever you might want at a given time -- plus the we-own-the-servers aspect is great. I sincerely hope everybody decides to archive there.

. For those of you who are techie-minded: when you get a surround sound system, do you absolutely need to hook it up through the DVD player thing that comes with it? Or can you use, say, your PlayStation3 instead?

. CATPOETRY. I love this idea so much!

. gratuitous icon meme )
bossymarmalade: buffy summers & willow rosenberg at college (you can smell the benzene)
I am having laddoo, teensy little satsumas, and Kootenay coffee for breakfast. mmmmmm.

Also, I watched Milk a couple nights ago and it brought me a feeling of deep satisfaction, because I wanted to see it forever and Vancouver cinemas were not cooperating with me, to my great disgust. I am astonished that Sean Penn was so good, because to be honest, the first time he ever blipped my radar was when Madonna charged him with domestic assault, so. I've always found him creepy. For the first time I totally forgot about that while watching one of his movies.

And now, stolen from [livejournal.com profile] carta, a book meme! )
bossymarmalade: al swearengen reads a missive (it's very trying to be this competent)
I like seeing these stroll across my friendslist uncut, so I'm not cutting mine either!

how many icons do you have?: 135
out of how many available icon spaces?: 135
would you buy space for more?: naturally!
do your icons make a statement?: when i need them to. Often the statement only makes sense to me.
what fandom is represented most?: simpsons/futurama
and the second most?: popfandom
what pairing is represented most?: it's an even split between chris/justin, pembleton/bayliss, justin/bitsy, and oddly, merlin/arthur. I need another marge/homer icon!
are your icons mostly from other people?: nope.
do you make icons?: yep.
are they any good?: they do what i want them to do.
animated icons are: usually not for me, but who could say no to vince and shamwow?

do the meme.

bossymarmalade: bart simpson hopes for a prize in the cereal box (you gotta be lucky *sometime*)
You know when you distinctly hear somebody call your name, except there's nobody there? Yeah, I hate that. Where I come from you're taught not to respond to that kind of thing, but this one almost tripped me up because it was a girl's voice and I'm at work with all my female co-workers. Sigh.

Anyhow, I saw an interesting meme in [livejournal.com profile] strippedhalo's journal and wanted to do it too!

The rules:
a. Type your answer to each of the questions below into flickr search.
b. Using only the first page, pick an image.
c. Copy and paste each of the URLs for the images into fd's mosaic maker.

1. What is your first name? marissa
2. What is your favorite food? roti
3. What high school did you go to? mcnair
4. What is your favorite color? blue brown pink
5. Who is your celebrity crush? bono
6. Favorite drink? sorrel
7. Dream vacation? ireland
8. Favorite dessert? egg tarts
9. What you wanted to be when you grow up? a writer
10. What do you love most in life? music
11. One word to describe you? concise
12. Your flickr name? I don't have one, so I used "missmaggie"

... which apparently gives the option of being either a cat or a dog! )

It's a BIG image, b/c I don't have access to any image programs, so be prepared if you choose to click!
bossymarmalade: marge simpson is shocked (my polite indignation knows no bounds!)
In situations like these, I always think longingly of an icon that [livejournal.com profile] callsigns used to have of Marge looking gleeful in front of her laptop. If she still had it I would steal it from her, but instead I stole a writing meme from [livejournal.com profile] turps33.

You keep using words like 'pasghetti' and 'momatoes'. You make numerous threatening references to the UN, and at the end you repeat the words 'Screw Flanders' over and over again. )
bossymarmalade: bart simpson hopes for a prize in the cereal box (you gotta be lucky *sometime*)
This has been an odd week, friendslist. The term is finally for real over (and it seems I managed to scrape through without anything lower than a B-, which considering how confused I was in that goddamn developed-world policy class is nothing short of a MIRACLE THANK YOU SARASWATI-MA.

And then at work a furnace fan burned out or something, filling the place with noxious fumes, forcing the secretary and me to sit in our cars reading (as there is a requisite amount of hours we have to stick around before head office okays us to go home with pay). Which was kind of lame, but on the other hand this happened for two days running -- our office is in a rather poorly-ventilated warehouse, since it's not like, y'know, the government cares to spend too much money on services for young children -- and so I was able to re-read "1984" in that time.

Aaaaaaanyway.

[livejournal.com profile] smallbeer tasked me to explain six of my icons, so here we go: )
bossymarmalade: blue eye with lashes of red flower petals (baby baby where did our love go)
I am on the verge of making a rage-filled post about the correlation between sitcoms and sexualized violence against women, but desperately holding back because I am SO not emotionally hardy enough for that right now and mostly feeling white-hot anger instead of logic.

So instead, I will do an icon meme! And to soothe myself further, I will do every sixth icon instead of every tenth, because that's how many can fit in a browser window while I'm looking at them. Boo-yah! )

I also made minor updates on the multifandom website, because wow -- I totally forgot I'd ever written some of that stuff! Good Lord.
bossymarmalade: brian kinney in pinstripes (brian don't play that)
Well, my self-portrait for yesterday's challenge turned out good! I am posting it here for anybody who's curious, and also because I cannot draw worth spit so I am somewhat proud at the flukiness of this. Please indulge me, and I apologize if this seems vain. *g*

And now, a poll about pronunciation! Come one, come all!! )
bossymarmalade: jc chasez's hair doing its thing (my hair is fandom's lifeline)
It seems I am averaging one commentary a night -- last night it was [livejournal.com profile] silveryscrape's Oh, The Places You'll Go. Fun!

And now, I believe I shall do that fic-naming meme! )
bossymarmalade: the phoenix: fire and life incarnate (i'm on an all-world diet)
Good morning, kids! How about starting your day with La Timberlake cussing?

justin timberlake - sexyback (dirty edit)

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] eponymous for the file!

Late last night I was plonking around on the computer waiting for my coffee to wear off so I could go to sleep, and googled myself to see what came up. I discovered that I had written (and totally forgotten) a scathing Amazon.com review of Charles De Lint's book "Dreams Underfoot" and it reminded me how much I LOATHED Jilly Coppercorn. Sometimes I think I'm the only person who loves fantasy books and hates De Lint.

But the more interesting thing was that I found there's a fellow maggiecat out there diligently writing stories about a boy who discovers that his mom is really his dad in drag, and then realizes two things: 1) he *also* likes cross-dressing in lingerie and 2) he wants to sleep with mom-dad. oh, momma.

[livejournal.com profile] sarahcascade linked to Pimp That Snack and it is SO COOL. And by that, I mean that not only are the enormous snack-copies incredible, but the accompanying narratives are funny as well! The sight of all that sugar and chocolate is making my throat close up, though.

And finally, a quiz result. )
bossymarmalade: the fattest sweetest doggie in the entire world (STAR)
As seen on [livejournal.com profile] cathybites' journal, the TV Quotes Meme!! Go ahead and guess -- the comments are screened. *g* I will put up what show it is once three people have guessed correctly!

1. "I wish you had died instead of mom!"
"Well, I wish I had too, you little bastard!"
- Everwood ([livejournal.com profile] callmesandy, [livejournal.com profile] edie22, [livejournal.com profile] throughadoor)

2. "And in a gutless act of political correctness, Pizza Day will now be known as Italian American Sauce Bread Day."
- The Simpsons ([livejournal.com profile] _jules_, [livejournal.com profile] kaelie, [livejournal.com profile] darlita)

3. "Look, I'm not much good at big speeches, and I know I haven't always been an easy guy to get on with. And I know that, given the choice, I probably wouldn't have chosen you as friends. But, I just want to say that over the years, I have come to regard you as ... people ... I met."
- Red Dwarf ([livejournal.com profile] ciderpress, [livejournal.com profile] sarahcascade, [livejournal.com profile] tenebrio)

4. "Living with you is like living in a living nightmare!"

5. "D____, last night I dreamed I was eating a large, tasteless gumdrop, and awoke to discover I was chewing on one of my foam disposable earplugs. Perhaps I should consider moderating my nighttime coffee consumption."
- Twin Peaks ([livejournal.com profile] katemonkey, [livejournal.com profile] jeez_louise, [livejournal.com profile] kaelie)

6. "I'll be glad when Pride's over so we can all go back to being ashamed."
- Queer as Folk US ([livejournal.com profile] throughadoor, [livejournal.com profile] kaelie, [livejournal.com profile] darlita)

7. "God got you through your stroke."
"No. God, as usual, was in the next county making hurricanes and hunchbacked babies."
- Homicide: Life on the Street ([livejournal.com profile] callmesandy, [livejournal.com profile] cocoajava, [livejournal.com profile] ciderpress)

8. "You know, we're all descended from fish. It would be no trouble at all to flip back in time, find the fish you descended from, and stuff it into a Cuisinart."

9. "Why is there yogurt in this cap?"
"I can explain! You see, it used to be milk, and, well...time makes fools of us all."
- Futurama ([livejournal.com profile] kaelie, [livejournal.com profile] indirajames, [livejournal.com profile] ciderpress)

10. "You think I wanted to be called 'Black Vulcan'? That was Aquaman's idea. I said, well, maybe we oughtta call you 'Whitefish'."
- Harvey Birdman ([livejournal.com profile] kaelie, [livejournal.com profile] cathybites, [livejournal.com profile] unholyglee)
bossymarmalade: cleese and chapman are unamused (pepperpots are not amused)
Today I am exhausted.

Through no fault of anybody's; I've had the Panamanian Death Flu for the last few days and far, *far* too much to do. I still have a crunkload of Spanish homework that really *really* needs to be completed by Monday morning, and it is only my last remaining vestige of self-respect, o friendslist, that is preventing me from begging one of you to write my composition for me.

However! There are lovely people from across the border about, and that's always nice. So in that optimistic vein, I will...um...do [livejournal.com profile] marej's meme on the 5 Things I Find Romantic:

1) That moment of watching somebody do something perfectly mundane -- cutting up and eating an apple, writing a letter, making a cup of tea -- and the realization of love that comes with it, that feeling that seeing that person so unguarded is something special and precious.

2) [livejournal.com profile] jae_w said the noir conventions, and that is just so perfect. Rain, and cigarettes, and liquor; wounded people who scorn any actual declarations of love because that's too close to admitting loneliness but who somehow manage to wind up crashing into each other.

3) Established relationships. There's an intimacy to easy, knowing banter that's madly romantic -- Nick & Nora Charles are the prototype for this. But even if it's not in a witty 30s b&w flavour, I like Scott Summers & Jean Grey, James & Lily Potter, Frank & Mary Pembleton, Homer & Marge Simpson. Seeing real, enduring closeness and affection.

4) The friendship leading up to the moment of truth. This can be done really lamely, or it can be done really beautifully; some good ones are Barney & Valancy in The Blue Castle, Kenji and Noi in The Last Life in the Universe, and Gene & Judy in For Me and My Gal because even though you hope it'll happen, somehow you just never see it coming and everybody is blindsided.

5) Code. Stuff that doesn't need to be explained, or unspoken communication...like Lorelai getting her thousand yellow daisies, or Brian saving a drawer for Justin; Bick and Leslie at the wedding in Giant, or Captain Von Trapp and Maria dancing the Laendler. (And believe me, it was only a massive effort of willpower that kept "SINGING" off this list.)

Also, I sound so fucking old-fashioned. Good Lord!

Oh, and just to sign off on an Unpopular Fandom Opinion: those two geekboys in Supernatural? I hated them. I hated them when they were the Trio on Buffy, and I hate them on spn. I don't ever want to see them AGAIN.
bossymarmalade: kirk and uhura on the bridge (for one hundred quatloos)
[livejournal.com profile] glockgal wanted me to make a poll specifically to ask two questions, but she forgot what one of them was. Still, I remembered the other.

[Poll #691057]
bossymarmalade: blue eye with lashes of red flower petals (baby got back)
And now for something *completely* different.

[Poll #686596]
bossymarmalade: fry gives you a thumbs-up (fry-approved!)
I was outside just now and it was lightly snowing. OMG WTF

Anyhow, it is once again time to do one of my dumbass polls that cover stuff like food, cartoons, and bad movies. Come one, come all! )
bossymarmalade: the wry virgin of guadalupe (la morenita)
Dear Mssr. Chasez:

Thank you so much for the virtual valentine! To be honest with you, I was kind of hoping that nobody would get me one because I'm just not that kind of girl, but I didn't count on your particular brand of insanity romance. Thank you, and keep reaching for that rainbow.

Love,
Margie

And now, because [livejournal.com profile] breathe_again tagged me for it, that (unwholesomely image-heavy) Top 20 List of People I Find Mind-Blowingly Hot. )
bossymarmalade: rimmer wears admiral hat at party (no stranger to the land of scoff)
Here you go, friendslist -- have an entry crammed full of meme answers and crappy half-completed fanfic!!

Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] lance_nerd for tagging me. Heh.

1. thank the person who tagged you.
2. list 5 random/strange/weird things about you.
3. tag 5 other people.

I will skip step 3, but here is #2:
- i could drink hard liquor all the live long day and be fine, but a glass or two of wine and i'm on my ass. it doesn't even have to be *good* wine.

- at all times, i carry with me a toothbrush, toothpaste, hand lotion, Advil, a tiny sewing kit, nail clippers, travel wipes, and some candy (which i mostly end up feeding to other people). AT ALL TIMES.

- i usually choose to be professor plum in 'clue'. once i was forced to be miss white and i insisted on playing the entire game using a high, shrill voice with an english accent.

- over the holidays, i tried eating goat guts. they tasted like if you doused a goat with curry and then licked its fur.

- I grind my teeth. which is how i ended up with a fractured molar, which then needed to be root canaled and capped; i've never had a cavity.

Well, that was refreshing! And now for some WIPs.

the most juvenile and angsty Weiss Kreuz story EVER!! )

also, have some pointless meandering on the 'lost' island! warning: 50% dr. jack!! also warning: song lyrics!! )

and in conclusion, a popslash au where the boys are angels! who go to high school! also, there's mpreg! I SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED FREE THOUGHT!!! )

My only excuse for that last one is that I was writing it purely to entertain [livejournal.com profile] beth666ann. In retrospect, that's probably not a good enough excuse.
