it is happening again

SO I finally watched the new season of Twin Peaks, the 25 years later one, and was summarily disappointed.

First of all, I know to expect sexualized violence against women when it comes to David Lynch, considering that's what Twin Peaks is entirely predicated upon. But god dammit even for Lynch it felt gratuitous.

Secondly WHY WAS IT SO LONG. Why were there entire episodes that were just a black-and-white image of Dale against a background of static and then loud shouting and a nuclear bomb exploding. Why so many episodes of dim!Dale and so little of normal!Dale. Why the hell was Audrey married to that awful gaslighter. Why no comeuppance for Ben Horne. Why, why why why anything.

The symbolism didn't even feel right. In the original Twin Peaks it was weird and random, yeah, but everything tied in to at least one other aspect of the plot. In the nuPeaks I felt like I was watching 'intellectual' 'edgy' film student work that thought it was super meaningful but was really just kind of embarrassing to see.

The best part was Sarah Palmer opening her face to kill that dude. Oh, and the creepy "Laura?" coming from the Palmer house when Laura and Dale were standing outside it. That shit was terrifying.

In less annoying news, we've been binge watching Chopped and cheering for every loudmouth dude who comes in boasting that the other contestants "might as well go home now" and thinking that with their fauxhawks and hipster beards and tatts it makes them super-edgelords to get cut in the first round. Hopefully before any of the female contestants who they dismissively refer to as "girls".

Happy International Women's Day!!

Sarah Palmer's face was the best fucking thing ever, though it really didn't need that level of sexualised violence against every single woman on the show for me to viscerally enjoy it. And the constant leering and groping of poor Agent Tammy Preston by David Lynch's character was extremely off-putting.

It would have been pretty interesting as six episodes, I think, but personally I watched it while doing a sewing project.

I had a similar (though not identical) reaction to TP reboot (of which I think made it through 1.5 episodes) as I did to Legion (of which I made it through maybe 5 episodes and quit in a fit of frustration), which could be summed up with: I'm old enough now to admit that this utter BS. TP season one was groundbreaking at the time. Season two, was still new enough to be engaging. Now? Meh. As for Legion, I'm honest to god confused why it gets the acclaim that it does. Perhaps because there's a legion of fanboys. Perhaps, I have no taste. Either or.

Ooh, Twin Peaks is on Crave. Now I can sit through it and be thoroughly disappointed too.
I'll want to watch the original again to remember how oh-so-nouveau it was in its heday.
Might have to have a coffee and a piece of cherry pie while I watch it.

Food Network is on free-preview right now. I have strong urges to punch every 'chef' in the nuts so far.
