In situations like these, I always think longingly of an icon that [livejournal.com profile] callsigns used to have of Marge looking gleeful in front of her laptop. If she still had it I would steal it from her, but instead I stole a writing meme from [livejournal.com profile] turps33.

What's the last thing you wrote?

That Chris & Britney homicide detectives story for Awesome April.

Was it any good?

For what it was, sure, I guess.

What's the first thing you ever wrote that you still have?

I'm sure I have some fic about original characters kicking around on yellow legal pads somewheres.

Write poetry?

No.

Angsty poetry?

Not since high school.

Most fun character you ever wrote?

Ever ever? That may have been writing Phillip J. Fry in an RPG that I participated in for a very short amount of time.

Most annoying character you ever wrote?

I had to write a great many annoying characters/characterizations in the ol' "Make Me Write Stuff I Hate" meme, but I would say that Chris Thormann topped the list (thanks so much, [livejournal.com profile] verdandi). *g*

Best plot you ever wrote?

Smuggler. Especially since [livejournal.com profile] smartlikejustin laid it all out beforehand so I just had to fill out the blanks. ahahahah!

Coolest plot twist you ever wrote?

erm. Raw, maybe? Or that Jean/Mystique story, Walking Miracle, My Skin.

How often do you get writer's block?

All the time. Far more than I used to, which I think is due to fatigue what with school and work and everything; my old job sucked, but I had long stretches of nothing to do + a computer screen that nobody could see, which made productivity a lot easier.

How do you fix it?

No clue. Either it happens, or it doesn't.

Do you type or write by hand?

Write by hand? Oh HELL no.

Do you save everything you write?

I make a desultory effort to, but there have been a lot of things I've written that are lost to the ethers.

Do you ever go back to an old idea long after you abandoned it?

Now and again. It's hard to pick up on an old idea sometimes, because I don't remember why I was so in love with it or where the hell I intended to go with it.

What's your favorite thing that you've written?

Joke Sign.

What's everyone else's favorite thing that you've written?

A Person of Simple Tastes. heh!

Do you ever show people your work?

Sure. I've taken some of it (carefully chosen, occasionally edited) to writer's group.

Who's your favorite constructive critic?

[livejournal.com profile] tsamm. I never got into the habit of having my stuff beta-read, but whenever Beth's kindly done me that favour it's been brilliant, supportive and incisive and smart and full of really great suggestions that make my writing sound a million times better. It's like having Justin from "The Way You Know Him" edit your work!!

Did you ever write a novel?

I wrote a melodramatic vampire novella set in Egypt that stole liberally from Anne Rice, does that count?

Have you ever written fantasy, sci-fi, or horror?

... yes.

Ever written romance or teen angsty drama?

Yes!

What's one genre you have never written, and probably never will?

I can't think of one. What's commonly considered "chick lit", I suppose, although I hate that term. I should say the kind of genre that unironically celebrates consumerism and landing a man as the pinnacle of achievement.

How many writing projects are you working on right now?

Actively? I usually have at least five things on the go.

Do you want to write for a living?

God, that would be wonderful. I don't think I'm prolific enough, though.

Have you ever written something for a magazine or newspaper?

I have indeed, and currently do for Sequential Tart.

Have you ever won an award for your writing?

I won a $575 scholarship, which was pretty awesome.

Ever written something in script or play format?

Yes, for a scriptwriting class in high school. Also various other nonsense.

What is your favorite word?

"Really". I think it comprises about 38% of my total writing output.

Do you ever write based on yourself?

Of course. Well, let me explain: the way I write is heavily reliant on what I think and feel and notice; the trick is to reframe or assign these elements according to the characters. So while I'm not literally transplanting my own experiences into my (fictional) work, I feel like if I have no idea about what a character's doing/feeling/thinking then it'll come across artificial. Y'all have no idea how much of me there really is in my work ... or maybe you do, because I haven't been as circumspect as I think I have. ahahahah!

Which of your characters most resembles you?

Oh hell, I dunno. Uh ... Lisa.

Where do you get ideas for your characters?

Hah hah, I just steal from hard-working creators! Wait, that doesn't work for RPF. Uh ... your momma!!

Do you ever write based on your dreams?

Oh fuck no.

Do you prefer happy endings, sad endings, or cliff-hangers?

Whatever works. I'm not married to any of these.

Have you ever written anything based on an artwork you've seen?

Probably, not that I can remember now. I'm sure I've written things that [livejournal.com profile] glockgal's drawn, although that may have been more relevant back when we were into, y'know, Gummi Bears and the Wuzzles.

Are you concerned with spelling and grammar as you write?

ALWAYS.

Ever write something entirely in chatspeak?

...

I refuse to believe that anybody would even entertain this idea.

Does music help you write?

Maybe a little? Just to ootch me into the mood; once I'm actually ticking along, music/tv/other people talking tends to blur into white noise.

Are people surprised and confused when they find out you write well?

This has happened quite a few times. I guess people just don't expect it of me, which ... I don't even know how to analyze that, honestly.

Quote something you've written.

"So," JC said, licking his fork, "Kevin's a big dead dog-eating zombie."

That Chris & Britney homicide detectives story for Awesome April.

wait, what? WHAT?

and I still say the marker sniffing story was the most brilliant thing ever. EVER.

(or perhaps Keep Pounding Rhythm, which I still have deep, deep love for)
