Oooooookay then.
I've been reading this book called "How Do I Look?" about queer film and video, and one of the contributors is a guy named Richard Fung who talks about his childhood in Trinidad. And when I read that sentence in his essay, I had this kneejerk initial reaction of, "Whaa? There's no gay people in Trinidad!!" which goes to show you how deep cultural conditioning goes, man. I don't recall even being aware that there were gay people in the world. I was completely perplexed as to why people smirked when I moved here and told them that I'd attended a strict Catholic all-girls school (although one might argue that the whole schoolgirl thing is less an issue of lesbianism and more an archetypal sexual fantasy).
And now Oprah is on, informing the world about methamphetamines. I tell you, daytime television is so infuriating in its narrow little upper-middle-class structure; I inadvertently watched about ten minutes of The View this morning and nearly had an apoplectic fit. Not that evening tv is much better -- Primetime was on last night and they featured a story about a "heroic girl" who made a 911 call, and said that she loved to "ride her skateboard" and "smile". Smiling is a fucking hobby now? Bitch please. But it's *still* better yet than the CNN story on Dubya holding hands with a Saudi prince, complete with juvenile snickering about his "mandate". grrrrrr.
...omg I'm totally all curmudgeonly. I blame The O.C.! It sucks so much now that I only read
callmesandy's recaps instead of watching it!!
