chootoy. Thank God it's the weekend. After lunch I'm gonna try and feedback a bunch of people who deserve feedbacking.
And, um, I cribbed a bit from beckynicky, here. Because the idea of them AIMing each other is too cute. And there's a mention of the Dracoverse in there too. It's all pretty implausible, but, y'know.
So, because it's been plaguing me for ages:
Stealth
His first thought is that Bruce is going to be pissed.
But there's no help for it, and Lance doesn't intend to starve or freeze to death in some godforsaken Russian forest just because he's scared of making Bruce irritated, half the world away. He was trained for this. He might as well put it to use.
"You'd better step carefully," Babs advises him, smiling wryly over the computer screen. Her red hair is bright on the LCD panel, bright against the starkness of his room, and he can practically feel the warmth she radiates. It's welcome and he curves himself closer to the screen, wishing that Russia wasn't so goddamned pale all the time.
"I know," Lance sighs, rubbing one hand ruefully against his face. Babs makes a sympathetic noise.
"He'll want to be the first one to know," she continues. "He'll want you to tell him about it. Not like when the media first sprang this whole space-deal on CNN." There's a quiet spoing as Lance's AIM pops up. Babs arches an eyebrow when the screen name jman23 shows, and says dryly, "I suppose you boys will want some...alone time now?"
Lance grins, feeling ridiculously better. "Were you this way with Dick and Garth, too?"
"I was worse. Go on, talk to your popstar boyfriend to your little heart's content--"
"Babs, I'm a popstar too...."
"--just don't forget, you've got to face the Bat sometime."
"Don't we all," Lance murmurs, clicking on AIM to see what Justin wants.
He'd actually gone down into the Cave once and found Bruce watching the PopOdyssey DVD, and wasn't that embarassing, his ass in spangled chaps six feet tall in front of Batman.
Then again, considering the way their Nomex body-armour looked, maybe it wasn't that big a deal.
Bruce hadn't said anything, and Lance didn't offer anything. Once, Bruce grunted, a sound of sudden recognition, and Lance looked up to see the intro to "The Game is Over," and his game-sprite being twirled while his name was announced.
"That's you," Bruce said, and Lance knew what he meant. Gameface.
"Except I'm not wearing the mask," Lance said quietly. "No mask, no Robin."
The DVD flicked off abruptly. "You'd like to think so, wouldn't you."
They didn't talk again that night.
Dick talks to him--no, Nightwing talks to him about it, but with Dick they're almost one and the same and so Lance doesn't find it too strange to be talking over the comms about his new space project while Nightwing's on a stakeout.
"It's shouldn't be too hard," Lance muses, eyes flickering over the screens where Dick's heartrate shows up, steady and strong. Lance envies him that. Dick's been doing this so long that he's not even concerned, not even mildly jittery about the probability of having to swing down into battle in the next fifteen minutes.
"Naw," Dick says, his voice friendly even over the comm lines. "Heck, you dance and sing in front of thousands of people on a regular basis--after that, I wouldn't think anything could rattle you."
"Uh." Lance isn't sure what else to say, because he never really thought of it that way. He hurries on, fingers skittering over the control panels so he can manipulate the fibre optic cameras that he and Dick had planted in the warehouse earlier. "Uh, yeah--the hardest part'll be making it look like it wasn't too easy, y'know?"
"I know."
Lance knows he does, too, because Dick had to hold back an awful lot while he was training to become a cop. And he knows the other Robin, the one who does all the work that Lance can't manage because of his popstar secret identity (and doesn't that sound dumb), has to pretend as well.
Pretending comes easy, though. He's used to it by now.
"Here they come," Dick whispers fast over the comm, and Lance watches his heartrate jump.
Justin knows, because Lance took him jumplining once, and Justin had held on tight and hadn't let go all night, and was still holding onto Lance in the morning and all through the day even though they had that stupid TRL "Live @ Your House" thing to film. And Lance was exhausted then, because he was filming and the other Robin was away--in Thailand, or something--and so Lance had to fill in more than usual, which the dark hair came in handy for.
But sometimes, then, Justin would stare at him with this look of absolute wonder, the way he used to look at Janet when they were touring with her and the way he still sometimes looks at Chris, and Lance would feel better.
He'd been considering giving up the mask for good, but when he found Justin looking at it once, running his fingers ceaselessly over the dark, dark green of it, he thought he might not.

Bruce watching the PO dvd kills me, man. KILLS. ME. And he took Justin jumplining? oh, that's so...*hot*.
