how it feels to be a fembot living in a manbot's manputer's world
It's International Women's Day! Reuters has a slideshow called "A Woman's World" up, but if you're going to take a look be warned that although a lot of the photos are lovely, there are some images of brutality that are really hard to look at.
Anyhow, I wanted to not concentrate on the struggles so much for once, and concentrate on joy, so here's
Now this is from my work playlist, so unfortunately no songs with much raunch or rawness, but maybe I'll make another post once I'm home with access to my other music.
The name of the artist is a link to information about them, and the name of the song is where you right-click download. No need to leave a comment, just listen and hopefully enjoy!
amar - heavy intro: no particular notes, this is just a pretty intro
barbara lewis - hello stranger: I will forever relate this to one of the first scenes of Homicide: Life on the Street that I ever saw.
bessie smith - after you've gone: I knew this song first from the Gene Kelly/Judy Garland movie "Me and My Gal", but Bessie Smith's version is better.
brenda fassie - nakupenda (i love you): the peppy horn section is my favourite.
buffy sainte-marie - lazarus (dead or alive): this woman is such a fucking bad ass, and this song is the shit. That vibrato thing that's her trademark has never sounded so awesome.
cibo matto - about a girl: you'll notice I included a lot of covers of songs by dudes, because they are awesome covers. This is the Nirvana song, done all boozy-loungey.
cyndi lauper - la vie en rose: this is the most heartbreaking version of this song I've ever heard.
dolly parton - harper valley pta: it was either this or "9 to 5"!
doris day - i enjoy being a girl: LOL (seriously though, this is like the ultimate in performative white femininity, what with a)the Flower Drum Song origin with Linda Low waiting for Joe/John/Billy to embrace her ivory shoulders or b)this version by Doris Day, famous for romancing Rock Hudson in most of her movies.)
ella fitzgerald - it's all right with me: none of the versions done by men achieve the same breezy come-on-baby sound that Ella gets.
emm gryner - pour some sugar on me: yes, the Def Leppard song.
erykah badu - tyrone: the audience's enjoyment of the song is half the fun with this one.
jem - maybe i'm amazed: I would've had trouble imagining somebody de-bombasting this Paul McCartney song, but she manages!
jill scott - getting in the way: I dunno how she manages to sound so silkily disdainful, but it's genius.
judy garland - our love affair: I like the cosy, intimate feel of this -- it doesn't have the same underlying sadness that a lot of Judy's songs do.
june carter cash - will the circle be unbroken: UNGH I like the big down-home version of this that Johnny Cash did with a bunch of other folk music greats, but June's solo has a quiet toughness that's all the more affecting when you've heard the other one.
kate & anna mcgarrigle - the log driver's waltz: OH LORD MY CHILDHOOD
kate gibson - dance me to the end of love: I don't know if this artist ever recorded anything else, but I love her Leonard Cohen cover enough to make up for it.
lata mangeshkar - kabhi kabhie mere dil mein: eh, Mukesh comes in at the end there, but it's Lata's voice shimmering like a shehnai that's best.
margaret - creek lullaby: there is so much going on with this snatched, stolen, lost bit of music, I can barely process.
miriam makeba - intandane: to me this sounds like a song from a black-and-white detective film. Which would be INCREDIBLE.
nelly furtado - powerless (josh desi remix): the remix gives this song a bit of flourish that improves it tenfold.
odetta - no expectations: dear god, hearing Odetta sing this song, you will never want to listen to the Rolling Stones version again.
peggy lee - it's been a long long time: this is a welcome-home-from-WWII standard, but Peggy's version makes it something a little less "sweet blameless patient lover" and more ... well, you'll see.
scala - exit music (for a film): y'all I am straight-up terrified and weeping at the end of this, which the Radiohead original doesn't do.
sheila chandra - standing stones: lol I first heard this in an episode of QAF US, but goddamn, the mix of Hindi and Latin still gets me.
sun yan zi - silent all these years: apart from the weird dated little electronica swoop in that one part, I like this as much as the Tori Amos original.
tanya chua - yellow: this I like *more* than the Coldplay original.
tegan and sara - dancing in the dark: wow, I really managed the Canadian Content quota in here, lol -- it's the Bruce Springsteen song, of course.
the carrie nations - look on up at the bottom: this is a fictitious band, and apparently there are two different versions with vocals done by different artists, but I don't know which one this is.
tv carpio - i wanna hold your hand: FUCK YEAH
vienna teng - city hall: this one makes me get all weepy-eyed too. How can you not?
youmi kimura - always, time after time: Also known as "that song from the end credits of Spirited Away"; it so perfectly encapsulates the sweet, pretty sadness of leaving girlhood behind for womanhood.
Yay!
