Well, amazon.ca is sending the same response that other branches of amazon are sending:
It has been misreported that the issue was limited to Gay & Lesbian themed titles - in fact, it impacted 57,310 books in a number of broad categories such as Health, Mind & Body, Reproductive & Sexual Medicine, and Erotica.
This problem impacted books not just in the United States but globally. It affected not just sales rank but also had the effect of removing the books from Amazon's main product search.
Many books have now been fixed and we're in the process of fixing the remainder as quickly as possible, and we intend to implement new measures to make this kind of accident less likely to occur in the future.
Thanks for contacting us. We hope to see you again soon.
At any rate, since we're all fired up over amazonfail, how about directing a wee bit of that energy to the petition over at racebending.com? Seriously, y'all, we're struggling to even get five thousand signatures on this thing. Not having a bigger group behind us is what makes it easy for Frank Marshall to turn our dark-skinned heroes white and then blithely tell us on Twitter, "The casting on this movie is finished, so let's all take a deep breath and wait to see it."

If you could take a moment to pop over and sign the petition, it would be greatly appreciated.

I sort of made one of my stereotypically vague posts wondering why the internet focuses on some outrages and ignores others. You know, in that really loose definition of 'wondering'. And then privated it because I didn't feel like talking more about it. Ah well.

I suspect that for a lot of people the simple fact that it's a kids' movie based on a cartoon is automatically going to mean they don't pay much attention to anything about it.
Not saying that that's all there is to it, because clearly it isn't. But at least half (probably much more than half) of my facebook friendslist have never heard of Avatar, and of those who have, a good chunk of them would dismiss anything to do with it as none of their concern because it's some kiddy thing. Whereas they all know what Amazon is.
Which sucks.

Since I don't use Amazon, I can only watch with a bit of a cocked-eye. I hope it'll resolve quickly.

Also, I may be biased on Amazon's behalf, but I like that they used the words embarrassing and ham-fisted. I appreciate it when people admit they fucked up. Though I know for a lot of people this won't be enough admission. I never really believed that it was an intentional anti-GLBT thing, though, at least not at the company level. They are messed up in many ways, but I just don't think that's one of them.

And for the record, my so-very-whitebread kids, who love Avatar, were all "that's not what the characters look like" when I showed them the casting pictures. In their opinion, this is going to "suck worse than Eragon" which is about as low as a movie adaptation can go in their ranking system.

The Avatar casting really is epic, epic fail.

I know Mike and Bryan don't have much (any?) control over the movie, but have you heard anything from them about their thoughts on the casting?
