[ 14 Valentines - Day 5: Sexuality ]

I will be answering each and every comment you lovely, smart people have been leaving me, but bear with me because it might take a little while!

For today's theme, I was considering a whole post about why "asexual" is a valid choice and how choosing to wait to have sex is often just as fraught a subject for women as choosing to have plenty of sex, but to be honest I am tired and pretty much just said everything I wanted to, so instead,

Please right-click-download and enjoy!

avenue d - do i look like a slut?: trashy, insane electroclash with a healthy dose of humour.

be good tanyas - the lakes of pontchartrain: I included songs like this that originally were written for a male singer; the job they do with this Louisiana ballad is lovely.

bessie smith - empty bed blues: long before Madonna and whoever else started singing about sex, the ladies of blues were rolling out laid-back, funny, and hot songs like this.

betty hutton - hit the road to dreamland: she woos him, she cajoles him ... then she boots him out in the morning.

blondie - call me: any time, any place, any where, any way!

britney spears - do somethin': there was, like, this twenty-minute window where Britney decided she was a grown-up woman and owned her grown-up sexuality, dropping the coy babygirl act. This song was at the height of it. Naturally, the album (and her new adult image) tanked.

buffy - under your spell: Tara's song to Willow, of course.

cansei de ser sexy - music is my hot hot sex: yes, that song from the Mac ads! But it's awesome.

christina aguilera - dirrty: God, do you remember how much everybody slagged on Christina when she made this song & video? And how they'd bleep ridiculous things like "makes my cherry pop" in Candyman? Man, people suck. And Christina's wonderful.

cyndi lauper - i drove all night: this is how far Cyndi will go for a booty call.

dolly parton - harper valley pta: it's getting so a woman can't even wear a short skirt in peace anymore!

dusty springfield - son of a preacher man: wouldn't we all like to deflower delicious preacher's sons?

edith piaf - mon légionnaire: if you don't speak French, read the English translation and it'll explain why this song's in this list.

emmylou harris - magdalene laundries: this is a Joni Mitchell song, but Emmylou's version is brilliant at being full of rage underneath that haunting voice.

frankee - fuck you right back: if you've heard the Eamonn song "Fuck You", well -- this one's better.

imani coppola - legend of a cowgirl: I love this song so much. It's sassy, it's fun, it's fast.

lucille bogan - shave 'em dry: I put this one up all the time. Vintage raunch for the win!

missy elliot - work it: and Lucille's present-day successor!

norah jones - turn me on: imperious, languid commands to turn her on. Sweet.

peaches - two guys: and speaking of imperious commands, Peaches wants two guys to get it on for her delectation. I'm sure many of us can relate.

queen latifah - big, blonde and beautiful: from Hairspray, and every bit awesome.

regina spektor - chelsea hotel: a very excellent rendition of the Leonard Cohen song.

sarah vaughn - whatever lola wants: ... and you know what Lola wants, right?

scandal - the warrior: love is a battlefield! Or something to that effect.

sinéad o'connor - daddy i'm fine: I love the rocking, bold way she owns her sexuality in this.

skunk anansie - secretly: the tangled, racing lust of an ill-advised affair.

the bangles - in your room: breaking and entering is okay if it's to get jiggy!

the pointer sisters - fire: it's a little bit yes-means-no, but sexuality comes in many mutually-consensual flavours, oui?

the rocky horror picture show - toucha toucha toucha touch me: if you haven't heard this song or seen this movie, your teenage years were sadly bereft.

the runaways - cherry bomb: wild girls! teenage rebellion! yah-hoo!

the simpsons - we put the spring: I figured a song about a bordello belonged on this list.

t.v. carpio - i wanna hold your hand: from Across the Universe; I love this version, all dreamy and yearning.

ute lemper - die ballade von der sexuallen horigkeit: okay, I confess -- I only stuck this in here because it has "sexuallen" in the title. hee!

Oooh, a female singer covering "Fire"! Excellent. It's a Springsteen song, and I've always been a little ambivalent about it, how he sells it so straight-up and innocently when the lyrics are so...eyebrow-raising if you really listen to them. /ramble

Thanks for sharing these!

oooh awesome. i sometimes wish more people posted and/or listened to stuff by women. it's as if half the folks i know only listen to men.

...which is probably true. and makes me sad.

so many of my favorites all in one place! thank you!

[identity profile] violetisblue.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The last one is "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" and is all about women manipulating men who think with their dicks, so...fairly appropriate. :-)

[identity profile] graycastle.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
what a great list, thank you - I'm downloading a bunch of these. :D

Ooh! I shall be d/l tonight!

..why "asexual" is a valid choice and how choosing to wait to have sex is often just as fraught a subject for women as choosing to have plenty of sex...

Right on! I can't believe how much flak I get for that sometimes.

[identity profile] armistice.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I downloaded a bunch.

And I the first time I heard "Fuck You Right Back" was when it was being performed by a drag queen during my sister's bachelorette party. It was amazing.

[identity profile] armistice.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant to say, "Thank you," also.

[identity profile] blacksquirrel.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool - thanks!

I love so many of these. You've nailed why I adore that Nora Jones song - she so effortlessly combines a very frank sexuality with a sweet, smooth, kind attitude toward the world and her relationship, which is partly the words, but also a lot to do with her masterful delivery. Completely unapologetic and wonderfully humane. Excellent

Ooh, <3 that Sinead song. And hee hee, the Springfield bordello song. Like Marge says, "Sleazy entertainment and raunchy jokes will never be as popular as
sobriety and self-denial!"

Man, that cover of "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" makes me go all twisty inside. Awesome. (I downloaded a whole bunch, thank you so so much. Also thank you for the other posts you've been making the last few days!)

Wandering in from 14valentines, and ooh, thank you! these are awesome!

(Also agree with the post about sexuality that you didn't make.)

Am downloading almost all of these. Thanks!

I've been reading your other valentines posts as well, and I don't think I've said, but both the posts themselves and the comments have been very thought-provoking and interesting. And eye-opening, and maddening, in the way that I need my eyes opening, because there's still so much I'm not aware of. So thank you for that as well.
