bossymarmalade: the fattest sweetest doggie in the entire world (STAR)

white people have names like "lenny" whereas black people have names like "carl"

I've seen some news outlets fondly, indulgently say that this just shows that Bush is human. Which is faulty reasoning to me, because I think it just shows that in every way, he is full of shit.

In other news, there is no possible WAY I'm gonna be finished my Worst Scenario fic by the due date, seeing as I have not started it (or, indeed, even picked a fandom in which to write it). Ahhhhh, well.

We watched part of a government-produced film on "Canadian multiculturalism" the other day in Sociology class, which was very amusing because you had the standard polite attempts at impartiality where people said, "oh, it's wonderful, all the different food and languages!" and "it's not good, because we all ghettoize, Oriental, white, whatever!" and one wonderful individual who declared, "As long as we make sure we whites still get our say!!" (right, because that's been *such* a problem in history. *snicker*) Also, the usual comparisons between the American view of the "melting pot" and the Canadian view of the "cultural mosaic", which of course we all agree is better than the American way. *g*

Anyhow, next week we start studying popular culture, and our homework is to find and tape a music video that's enjoying current popularity and explain why people like it and why you like/dislike it. My only problems with this are: a)SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM and b)I kind of wish JC Chasez had a crappy discotrash video out so I could use it to explain to my class that it's his mating dance to attract bandmates. Because that would be easier than theoretically explaining a new video by La Timberlake as being a sublimated vision of his Oedipal complex. Also, I wish Viggo Mortenson made videos. If I had the opportunity to explain a video of "Half Fling" to my class, I could QUIT SCHOOL A HAPPY WOMAN.

Here's the thing: I don't want news outlets being "indulgent" with any person in power. Their job is to ferret out all the news and get it out to us in as unbiased a way possible, not be affectionate mommies of spoiled children, or fangirls. And they talk about liberal bias to the media? Like hell.

And you can't use the All Day Long video? I happen to not think it's crappy or trash, but it may fall under disco...

Hear, hear. I seriously don't get the whole trend of making Bush seem like an affable, slightly dim good ol'boy, when he's clearly more dangerous than that.

As for the ADIDAS video -- I have to use something very current, and besides, I don't think it was ever popular here since I never saw it get any airplay!

[identity profile] chrismm.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was ever released in North America--some of the usual outlets here thought it was too risque. Which cracks me the fuck up, seriously, and I have many theories about why it's OK to have videos about drugs and hos and sex that are hard and mean and violent, but not OK to have a video that's funny and sexy and light and playful. Sort of like how the only way you could have a strong woman in movies in the early years of the industry was if she saw the error of her ways, and died at the end.

I think Nelly & Justin's video for "Work It" was kept back on the same grounds. Which is ridiculous, because although I find both videos to be silly and populated with scantily-clad women, they're certainly not as god-blasted awful as ANY 50 Cent video and 95% of all hard rock videos ever made. I think there's quite a lot of truth in your theory, sai.

you get to study popular culture? They should just go ahead and give you an A right now.

DUDE. I cannot *wait* until I get to university, because I think they have ENTIRE classes on pop culture there instead of it just being a component of the course!

Also, I have by this point interacted with most of the other folks in the Peace & Conflict Studies program, and I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who has any interest in pop culture. And doesn't smell like patchouli, marijuana, or smug self-righteousness. Oh no wait -- that last one isn't true. *g*

[identity profile] cathybites.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not *smug* self-righ...okay, it is but it's charming on you! or, if not charming, than highly entertaining. so says I and Leeloo.

mug self-righteousness

it smells good on you. like caramel or hazelnut syrup.

Hee! I will indeed, and will have an array of them ready by the end of next week, probably. *g*

Please fill us in on which video you choose -- I'm kind of hoping Justin releases a stealth video really fast, so that you can explain how it's a love song for Momma.

[identity profile] bossymarmalade.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
ahahahahah! "love song for momma" should be the subtitle of EVERY SINGLE video he makes, for reals. All of Justin's songs have parenthetical lynncest!!

[identity profile] robanybody.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
as being a sublimated vision of his Oedipal complex

Ahahaha! I'll bet you'd get an A just for being the only one in your class to catch the subtext.

Hee! I don't think the class would know how to react, man. If it was a second year class, they'd listen politely and then have a serious discussion afterwards; but this first year class is more likely to throw their Petey Pablo ringtone cellphones at me. ahahahaahahhah!!!

STAR ICON!

Too bad it had to be a current video because personally I'd do Quit Playing Games With My Heart and a half-naked 15 year old Nick Carter, shirtless 17 year old Howie and baby!AJ playing in the rain. Lou Perlman + June Carter = OMGWTFBBQ!

I have no idea what's 'current'. I don't think I've seen MuchMusic in awhile. Except for the video represented by my icon.

AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAH! omg that would be BRILLIANT.

I don't think I've seen MuchMusic in awhile

I haven't either! Which is highly unusual for me. I feel so disconnected from the kids!

i love teaching cry me a river b/c it's incredibly elegant intratextually and fascinating intertextually! another one that works really well and brings up interesting discussions is beautiful (in terms of what the ultimate message is and why we approve of certain forms of body modifications but not others etc.)

re current as in really current...i just downloaded the latest tatu which raises all kinds of interesting gender issues and issues of commodification and, of course, censorship! [i can send it your way if you're intersted]

also, i'd love to hear what you decide on!!!

Cry Me a River and Beautiful are *great* ones; if they were "current" I'd *totally* hit you up on how to present them. Right now I'm thinking of doing Kanye West's "Blood Diamonds of Sierra Leone"; have you seen that one? I saw it once and I was struck by the fact that through all the images of happy white people cluelessly enjoying their blood diamonds, Kanye included not ONE shot of a rapper cluelessly enjoying his bling.

the latest tatu which raises all kinds of interesting gender issues and issues of commodification and, of course, censorship! [i can send it your way if you're intersted]

I very much am interested and would love to see it, thank you so much for the offer! Whoo-hoo!

hey,

i'm about to teach my vid segment, so i'd love to hear if you found a good video to talk about. did you write anything? and do you have it or any others you might be able to share? (b/c i just expanded from 2 to 3 days and now have more room but nothing to show :-)
