bossymarmalade: gene kelly and fred astaire duet for ziegfeld (what a glorious feeling)

ta waits for a lady of less discriminatin' tastes

If I ever write a Lynncest story again, I will at some point have Lynn dress up fancy and proudly proclaim that she looks "as classy as that Nikki Newman on The Young and the Restless."

Thoughts like this are about the most exciting thing going on in my life right now, but that's fine; after the exhaustion of this past summer semester (although I acquitted myself decently in the Dreaded Biology with a B+, and thank you to everybody who encouraged me to take it!), I am enjoying the break before I have to go back on the fifth. Fall semester is all gonna be stuff like Sociology and Women's Studies which I should find easier, in sha'allah.

The other day I was reading a post in [livejournal.com profile] amandazillah's journal where she was missing the glory days of popslash, and [livejournal.com profile] ahestele mentioned in a comment "if you think turning people into a girl was wierd you should try throwing vampires, magic, and Wiccan lesbians into the mix" and I instantly thought, wait, there's like a *ton* of popslash stories with those in them! Well, maybe not Wiccan lesbians, but the other two. And they were damn good. Popslash had some of the best au's I've ever come across, largely because the characters were usually pretty recognizable; one could argue that this is because in RPS, there's no tried-and-true canon/characterization, but I'm in about as much mood to debate that as I am to read yet another post about some controversial!new!SGA-fic-critique comm. *g*

To wrap up this rambling and random post, behold my new Gene Kelly icon! Dear lord he was a handsome man; heaven save my heart from the black Irish!

I love me some Gene Kelly. He was so darn athletic when he danced.

I started off with Fred Astaire, and while I still love watching him dance, there's just *something* about Gene that's completely irresistible and warm and appealing; Fred was a little more removed and reserved. At the risk of drawing a shallow comparison, it's kind of how I feel about BSB vs *nsync. Heh!

[identity profile] robanybody.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Lord love that man. He stole my heart away so completely in all his movies.

He seriously did the same for me. There was a time when I referred to him as "my silver-screen boyfriend". *g*

[identity profile] callmesandy.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I was talking to a friend about genderswitch stories and was saying in popslash, there's generally no explanation! It just happens! And people turn into llamas and couches and switch bodies and stuff. It just happens! And there was that AU and this AU and, yup. Then I said the previous part made me miss popslash and friend, who's never read any, commented that now *she* missed popslash, too.

[identity profile] bossymarmalade.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It just HAPPENS! And if the story is written well enough (and many of them are), the explanation doesn't even really *matter*, because the ride itself is so fun!

friend, who's never read any, commented that now *she* missed popslash, too

Hee! That is the cutest thing ever!

[identity profile] callmesandy.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the 'magic realism' stories I read were done so well I never wondered why!

And yeah, it was so cute!

If I ever write a Lynncest story again

not IF, Maggie. when. WHEN.

good. glad we got that cleared up :)

I love your Gene so MUCH! All the while that I was searching for pictures to icon, I kept thinking of him, that fabulous kelly green and that *smile*. ♥!!

It's almost like it was PLANNED!!!

I miss the heady craziness of popslash too some days. It was fun.

Everyone ought to have a Gene icon. Whatever happened to the one you had with Gene beating on poor little Dean Stockwell?

(I will never understand gioow such an adorable child grew up to be Al. Never.)

[identity profile] bossymarmalade.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It was especially fun when otherwise decorous young misses decided to write stories with things like kidnapping and decapitation. *g*

Whatever happened to the one you had with Gene beating on poor little Dean Stockwell?

I don't knowwwwww!! I was thinking of that one too. It got wiped in one of the many computer crashes I've had, but I am *certain* I must have burned it on a disc somewhere at *some* point. I should look for it, man!

[identity profile] kitchendinah.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
A.) Ha! If ever there was one, that would have been the one fandom where a 'Kill the Annoying Tertiary Character' challenge would have caused a small nuclear meltdown. Oy, Jesus.

I haven't looked at that stuff in like, forever, and just spent a bit of time re-reading most of it. There are a couple things I like (the Whitlams thing in particular,) a couple I'm not entirely convinced I actually wrote (they don't read like I usually write, you know?) And the rest can go burn. Particualrly the jossed and or schmoopy stuff. Ew! Why do we let ourselves publish some things?

B.) I need to do some capping and base-making. It's been too long since I did that sort of thing. And I have a very shiny copy of the Philadelphia Story that's feeling very neglected.

[identity profile] xoverau.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Your challenge of the day is to write a popslash AU where they're Wiccan lesbians.
ext_872: eye with red flower petals as eyelashes (Default)

[identity profile] bossymarmalade.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah! That would take a LOT of doing indeed.

[identity profile] overloved.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Mmmm...Gene Kelly.

Mmmmm.

[identity profile] bossymarmalade.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
SERIOUSLY. How anybody could look that yummy in a sailor suit is beyond me. mrrrrawrrrrr.

[identity profile] cathybites.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Nikki Newman *is* a classy lady. I always wanted to have hair like hers.

*fond memories of Y&R*

one of the things that baffled me when I ventured into fandoms post-popslash was how AUs were kind of looked down upon. I remember in particular that a lot of people in lotrps were very anti-wingfic. of course, having read some of them, I can possibly understand why, but still! and there was also the distressing lack of high school!AUs. I think maybe popslash spoiled me.
ext_872: eye with red flower petals as eyelashes (Default)

[identity profile] bossymarmalade.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I have unknowingly unearthed a nest of Nikki Newman fans! I had no idea. My dad, on the other hand, thinks that Victor is the epitome of all that is cool in the world; if only Victor played soccer, he would be the perfect human being. ahahahahah!

how AUs were kind of looked down upon

One of the best things about popslash is that to be in it in the first place, you have to get over yourself and your embarassment. I think that in a lot of ways, that gave us a huge amount of freedom to write whatever the hell we wanted, and fortunately a lot of the writers were damn good!

The fact that I still feel a surge of love looking at that timbertrick icon of yours makes me very happy. *g*

[identity profile] marej.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
but I'm in about as much mood to debate that as I am to read yet another post about some controversial!new!SGA-fic-critique comm.

or, say, explaining the concepts of slash/yaoi and spoilers to a dimwitted mob.

why can't we just go back to the good old days of people spending too much money on buying buses to follow tours? *feels old*

the good old days of people spending too much money on buying buses to follow tours

AHAAHAHAHAHAHH OMG I had almost FORGOTTEN the fanbus! It only goes to show how fucking insane this fandom is that I should forget such a thing as the fucking FANBUS. Oh LORD.

"Oh-ho-ho-Lor'n'begory, shur you are...." Those sexy spry Irish!

Maybe you need a little motivation...

Question for you:
What magazine spread had shots of Justin in bed fast asleep?
(need it for "Jarbridge")

[identity profile] smoothlikebutta.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
The magazine with the sleeping picture was L'Uomo Vogue.

[identity profile] chootoy.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the L'Uomo info. Got the photo I was looking for. *smooch*

You win at the internet. I think we can all pack up and go home now.

Oh, Gene Kelly! Oh, Popslash AUs! :misses both:

I tried my best to get lotrips into the AU thang but it just never seemed to take off. Though, as far as I know, I hold several dubious distinctions in lotrips in regards to AUs.
ext_872: eye with red flower petals as eyelashes (Default)

[identity profile] bossymarmalade.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I am certain that the AU (like wingfic, or turns-into-a-girl, or any of those genres) can be done really well in just about any fandom; of course, fandom atmosphere can be pretty constrictive. It's a shame, really.

[identity profile] imogenics.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I do love Fred Astaire, but for me it will always be Gene Kelly. Fred Astaire was so slim and slight that he looked like he was made to float on air, but Gene Kelly was far too athletic and solid-looking, I think, and that's what makes his dancing so thrilling - it looks like a suspension of the laws of physics, an amazing impossibility. There is NO GOOD REASON someone so thick and sturdy should be able to glide around like he's got invisible iceskates on.

Man, I miss the veritable AU cornucopia that popslash was too. Crazy good writers with crazy weird ideas and the chops to pull it off, too.
ext_872: eye with red flower petals as eyelashes (Default)

[identity profile] bossymarmalade.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes yes -- exactly. Gene defied the laws of gravity, physics, and logic all at once, and managed to make jerseys and trousers look insanely sexy at the same time. Not to mention that huge bright *grin* of his! mmmmmmmm.

Crazy good writers with crazy weird ideas and the chops to pull it off, too.

Yes! I know that "crackfic" is all the rage among some people, but calling your fic that implies to me that you don't have the confidence to really CLAIM your nutty idea, y'know? Like, you're so scared that other people will point out its craziness that you hurriedly call it "crackfic" before anybody else can. Popslash has been the fandom that most constantly presents crazy weird ideas with utter satisfaction and aplomb and with no apologies, which really says a lot about the attitude we have about the source material itself. *g*

Let's see...it says it's a "CanoScan LiDE 20". Does that help?

[identity profile] babygotbass.livejournal.com 2005-08-25 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched Y&R for years, but I know if I turned it on tomorrow Nikki would still look fab. I think my favorite crazy popslash AU is The Seahorse story. A little mpreg with a little animal conversion thrown in. Crazy, but I love it!
ext_872: eye with red flower petals as eyelashes (Default)

[identity profile] bossymarmalade.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Nikki is so well-tended it's INSANE. The woman was having a nervous breakdown the other day and her french-braided hair was still impeccable!
