wesley, get momma's pryin' bar

Finished reading the Remix stories, which of course means that I will now bombard you with my opinions! Yaaaaay!

It Came From The Sky!!! (this is who we are at the end of the world remix) - An interesting take on tentacle-alien-JC; there's a sense of urgency and horror in a self-aware, "this can't be happening to us" kind of way that pulls the whole thing together quite neatly.

Dare (Crime and Punishment Mix) - The remix is deeper and sharper than the original, and I'm a sucker for seemingly innocuous games/comments that turn out to be much, much more (see Julad's "Murder" series); stories where the guys' closeness to each other is a double-edged sword are so good!

Tomorrow (The Paperweight Remix) - I don't think I'd read the original, which meant I had no idea what was happening through most of the story. I think it could've been a *little* more explicit at the end, but apart from that it's good, tight to the point of painfulness and JC's detachment is scary in an unsettlingly familiar way and the dialogue really *is* like they're in a play.

The Bull (Live Until You Die Remix) - Another one where I felt slightly as though I was missing vital info by not having read the original, but then I read the original and it wasn't any more forthcoming. Heh! At any rate, the remix has a wonderful trembling gold wash to it and still manages to be soaked with sorrow, and I'll make my only guess at the authors and say it's [livejournal.com profile] northernveil.

No End Without a Beginning (The Nile Is Not Only a River in Egypt Remix) - Unwieldy title, but good story. Depressed slutty Justin, distant-for-self-preservation Lance, and as an added bonus, a really fun JC. Raw and full of good sex and bad sex and considering that the story's about not admitting things to yourself, it still feels strangely *open*. Like a wound.

Sand at the Water's Edge (Drowning Within Sight of the Shore Remix) - Sometimes there's a certain sinking, dizzying pleasure you get when you let yourself dwell on whatever pain you're feeling, an indescribable satisfaction when you let yourself wallow in misery. It makes everything a little bit clearer, a little bit dreamier. This story captures that strange state to *perfection* and is sensual and insightful at the same time, with flawless characterization done deftly in so few words, and I loved the original so it's nice to love the remix just as much!

Oh, The Places You'll Go (98 and ¾ Percent Guaranteed) - Swirly and weird and discombobulated, but that's the point of it and it's well-done, druggy and pointy and a lot how I like my timbertrick. mmmmmmmm.

Rain King (The Justin Timberlake is Not a God Remix) - This one...I'm not sure if I like it, because I have issues with the characterization and it's really harsh. It's harsh and vicious and sandpapery but in the end, I think I should mention it because the story made me think about why I felt the way I did after reading it, and I always appreciate when a fic causes that reaction in me.

Bedroom Dancing: The Outside In Remix (The Wallflower Remix2) - remix of a remix! And a fantastic one at that, which is cool because unrequited love stories are sometimes annoying. But this one lets everybody be human, good and bad and self-denying and masochistic and incisive and blind, and I always like that in a story.

And now, to get ready for school. Today in Conflict & Conflict Resolution we are going to role-play the Israel-Palestine crisis. Oh joy. Why couldn't we do Sandinistas? I know more about Sandinistas!

Anyhow, later I hear there will be a new "Lost". Plus I found "Valley of the Dolls" in the library the other day, and although it's no "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" I'm still curious to see it. Heh.

My heart tells me which remix you wrote. But I might be wrong.

RE: Israel/Palestine. My dad went to a lecture last night, given by one of Sharon's advisors, and apparently it was a big long defense of Israel's current policies, in particular, the wall they've built across northern Israel. And the gist of it was, where the wall is, no bombings have been. Which, no bombings, good. Says I. Good luck with role-playing!

I am almost *certain* you know which one I wrote. I am so transparent. *g*

Also! Thank you for the info regarding the wall across northern Israel; I will remember it for the debate this afternoon. I don't know which side I'll be put on, but I'm sure I can work it in somehow. Eeeeexcellent!

I think *everybody* knows which story you wrote. You and Northern, so guessable!

This was really such an awesome year for remix. So many great stories! Happy Lambs! An excellent gsf! Did I mention HAPPY LAMBS? Nothing is better than happy Lambs.

Thank you. I think this might be my favorite piece of feedback ever.

You're very welcome! What I also liked but didn't mention (because it can put people off, strangely, and since I was reccing I didn't want to do that) is that you didn't shy away from the hetsex. Because, I mean, hetsex is good! It can work well even in slash! And I think it was great in setting the atmosphere in your story.
