no-one must know i dropped them in the toilet; not i, the man who drafted the paris peace accord

Some links, because they are of the important kind:

. from [livejournal.com profile] tammylee: PM Paul Martin's Speech Supporting the Civil Marriage Act. I guess having a PM who's Bono's bitch pays off! I hear he also intends to try and convince Bono to have a U2 concert in Ottawa. Canadian politics are CRACKY, y'all!

. relatedly, if you're Canadian, visit the Canadians for Equal Marriage site and check out the range of actions you can do to support Bill C-38.

. Killer Coke details the human rights atrocities that the Coca-Cola Corporation has perfomed in Columbia, including the murders of several unionists, which of course they still deny.

. Baby Milk Action promotes proper infant feeding in the developing world and works to regulate marketing of milk substitutes; aggressive marketing (Nestle is one of the major culprits) convinces mothers to feed their babies formula instead of breastmilk.

. I don't even know where to start pointing out what to despise about Henry Kissinger. Although Get Your War On does a pretty good job summing up my feelings.

And now, the definitions of those unfamiliar words that were one of the

pysanky: I spelled it wrong on the poll, which I think tripped people up. Sorry about that! Anyhow, they're Ukranian Easter eggs, with designs marked out on them with melted wax and a stylus. They're gorgeous.

siu mai: Chinese dim sum dumplings. They're pork and shrimp, mushrooms, and water chestnuts cooked in a wonton wrapper with a little roe on the top, and they're SO good. I want some right NOW!!

soursop: a Caribbean fruit, generally used to flavour a thick sweet drink or ice cream. Can't say I ever cared for it, but it's much beloved by the rest of my family.

furoshiki: a piece of cloth that the Japanese use to wrap things in; where I read it, it was being used to wrap a lunch box.

tiger balm: an Asian muscle rub, like Ben-Gay. It smells kind of spicy-sweet and awful at the same time, and burns like crazy when it first goes on. I think it's been banned in North America, or something.

rumspringa: that time in an Amish teenager's life where they're allowed to "run around" and experience the outside world before committing to the Amish lifestyle. If you'd asked me what this word meant before last year's trip to Iowa, I would've had no idea. *g*

athame: a black-handled knife used for ritual magic. One of two ritual knives commonly used; the other is the boline, which is more utilitarian. The athame is used purely for magic.

sari: traditional dress for Indian women. It's different from chadors, Punjabi suits, or any of the other things that people sometimes call saris; a real sari is a slip, a matching short-sleeved cropped blouse, and five-to-six yards of fabric draped around. Having worn one a few times, I seriously don't know how women wear these things every day, man.

walpurgisnacht: the festival of Walpurgis, originally meant as a final winter's celebration for witches but Christianized into a festival to scare away evil with loud noises and revelry.

sakura: Japanese for "cherry blossom"; there's a cherry blossom festival to view the flowers, which I totally understand because there's a lot of cherry blossom in Vancouver too, and it's one of the prettiest phases of the city when they're all in bloom. Also, every other Japanese brand is called "Sakura"--there's watercolour paints, gel pens, snack foods, and the hood on our stove is Sakura brand. Heh!
