bossymarmalade: blue eye with lashes of red flower petals (better than bush)

when push comes to shove you gotta do what you love

We're having a State of the Fandom Address kind of day! Which I'm not going to complain about, because I sort of like them and think they're important. My favourite, though, is by [livejournal.com profile] lisan and I guess it's more fandom-related than state-of: wherein she talks about those gifts popslash gives to her. And because I like that idea and at the moment don't have an Address prepared,

Number One: The best fuckin' alternate universe stories I've ever read, in any fandom ANYWHERE. There's a popslash story for practically any AU idea you can possibly think of, and even if they're not good (which all of the following links are, by the by), they're a laugh to read. Salem witchtrials? We got it. Russian revolution? You betcha. Vampires, bike messengers, or mermen? Check, check, and check. Plus we also have stories about a War Between North and South where JC is destined to be nothing but a WOMB, and who the fuck doesn't like themselves some'a that?!?!

Number Two: The writing, the writing, the writing. I can't even get into specifics because I love too much of it, from the spare little sharp melancholy pieces to the long emotional rollercoasters. I love the hetsmut and the slashsmut and the messed-up dynamics. I love the crazy crackfic and the just plain crazy. I love the things that I'm only barely smart enough to understand and the things that are a damn good laugh and the things that are lynncest or things that rip my heart out and stomp on it.

In fact, since I also love the teenie badfic? It's safe to say that the only stuff I don't like is the long, expositorial, deeply analytical fic with big elaborate description and an inescapable sense of self-importance. But there's more than enough of what I *do* like to keep me happy. Popslash, I <3 you!

But enough of that.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] flambeau has a little poll about recs pages that it might be worth filling out. And [livejournal.com profile] kitchendinah is asking for any of you who aren't huge HP fen to come fill out her poll about Fanfic Archives Design, because right now the answers are heavy on the HP side of fandom and she'd like a more balanced picture.

Non-lj related -- why is Mike Judge basically making a live version of Futurama? grrrrr. And with regards to the RNC, take a look at the keywords of above icon, plskthnx.

Later on today, I will post a detailed list of why King Arthur made me want to RIP MY EARS AND FINGERS OFF AND THROW THEM AT THE SCREEN. Yay!

You give the best.fandom.rantthingy.ever!! *smishes you*

Okay, so being jealous you went to see King Arthur last night is an emotion I can put away! *whew* :D

Dude, that's SO Futurama! I think Mike Judge is on crack.

*giggle* I love being smished. mmmmmm, smishy!

so being jealous you went to see King Arthur last night is an emotion I can put away!

Dear God YES. I've never been so bored watching men in armour battle it out in my LIFE! *weeps*

And I kind of want Mike Judge to fail, just because it's so OBVIOUSLY a rip on Futurama. I mean, the "person gets froze, wakes up in future" has been done before, but that person being a really dim-witted guy whose only cred is that he has first-hand knowledge of history? So, SO Futurama it hurts. grrar!

At which point I will stick my fingers in my ears and cover my eyes and go 'tra la la' as I scroll past. *g*

*giggle* The menfolk-scenery was nice enough, as was the TRU LUV OMG between Gawain and Galahad (*points meaningfully at icon*), but the story was *determined* to make me writhe in agony, yo!

[identity profile] ink-stain.livejournal.com 2004-09-01 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm a bit partial to the menfolk scenery, myself, and dude, Gawain/Galahad is CANON as far as I'm concerned.

As for the story, well. It's highly flawed. Even I'll admit that.

Which isn't to say I don't love the HP and all of the support they're showing! 'Cause God knows I do! ::loves on the HP people for being enthusiastic and generally cool:: But the HP experience is somewhat different than most other fandoms and I'd like to round things out a bit. So calling all Buffy/Angel, X-Files, Roswell, Star Trek, LOTR, Smallville, Due South, Highlander, Lois & Clark, Stargate-Firefly-Babylon 5-Star Wars, Gilmore Girls, Dawson's Creek and 90210 fen! (And everyone in between I've missed!) C'mon down! And thank you!

Yes! Did I make it sound as though the HP people didn't count? I tried not to, but perhaps my natural disdain for them shines through.

*g* I'm just kidding. I like HP fen too. *snuggle*

[identity profile] cathybites.livejournal.com 2004-09-01 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't it sad that a cartoon character would make a better president than our current one? *le sigh*

dammit, and I know when I read it I'll want to see it just to experience the pain for myself because I'm a fraggin' masochist that way.

If you do see it, go to a cheap theatre. Halfway through the movie, [livejournal.com profile] silvrsolace leaned over to me and said, "I'm glad I only paid four dollars to see this." Then near the end, she leaned over and said, "I am SO PISSED I wasted FOUR DOLLARS to see this." *g*

[identity profile] cathybites.livejournal.com 2004-09-01 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think ol' Tommy there in your icon probably has the right approach to seeing this movie.

Love the recs page poll. Recs pages make my world go round. Couldn't live without 'em.

[identity profile] bossymarmalade.livejournal.com 2004-09-01 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
Recs pages fuckin' RULE, man. They're especially good if you're just getting into a fandom; I find them well nigh indispensable then!

[identity profile] robanybody.livejournal.com 2004-09-01 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
why is Mike Judge basically making a live version of Futurama?

'Cause he's all out of ideas, and if you're going to steal new ones, Matt Groening is your go-to guy?

[identity profile] bossymarmalade.livejournal.com 2004-09-01 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Damn him! I mean, I even kind of *liked* "King of the Hill" once upon a time, but instead of going the Simpsons route and making more stories about the dad (which, god knows, made the Simpsons better), that show started making all its stories about Bobby. And Bobby is best in moderation. So then I grew to hate King of the Hill, and in turn, Mike Judge. And now he's stealing Futurama! And now I'm ranting like a crazy person. *giggle*

[identity profile] lisan.livejournal.com 2004-09-01 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
Err, thank you?

;P

That post was all about "gifts" in terms of writing, I didn't even touch on the general squees, friends and incredible storie, among others, so yours on the readers-stories side (and the links/recs!) is so cool!

[identity profile] bossymarmalade.livejournal.com 2004-09-01 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you don't think I was making fun of you or anything -- I really did enjoy your post "ALOT". *g* In fact, I need to comment in it, so, going to do that now!

[identity profile] lisan.livejournal.com 2004-09-01 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, sweetie, I know you weren't making fun of me (though I wouldn't have minded even if you were.) I'm just generally baffled and embarrassed every time anyone thinks I said/wrote something significant. ;P ::hugs:: Thanks!

[identity profile] msmarvel1.livejournal.com 2004-09-01 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
But after you rip your fingers off, how will you throw them at the screen... or rip off the ones on your other hand? ;-)
ext_872: eye with red flower petals as eyelashes (Default)

[identity profile] bossymarmalade.livejournal.com 2004-09-01 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured I'd bite them off, hold them in my palm (which is roughly the size of a teacup-saucer, lord help me), and perform a sort of catapult-motion to throw them. Plus, I was there with a friend, and she's very understanding about these things. I'm sure she would've torn my fingers off if I asked her nicely or let her eat my popcorn. *g*

[identity profile] violetisblue.livejournal.com 2004-09-01 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I would be a very happy popslash writer, if only I could get over not liking the music or its makers (trivial point). I would never be a happy KA writer, I don't know beans about Celtic anything.

It certainly is. Some apparently successful popslash writers don't seem to like the music/musicians or even KNOW anything about the band or its history! There's a place for everybody in the land of glitter and synchronized dancing, Vali. You're just not trying hard enough. I need to bring you a pair of tulip pants, and then it will all make sense.

Hey, if you're talking movie!Arthur, I think not knowing a damn thing about Celtic culture or mythology or even knowing how to pronounce the word "Celt" would be a motherfucking bonus. *g*

[identity profile] violetisblue.livejournal.com 2004-09-01 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"There's a place for everybody in the land of glitter and synchronized dancing, Vali. You're just not trying hard enough. I need to bring you a pair of tulip pants, and then it will all make sense."

Look, you know I love all you people, but you are all on drugs. Quite powerful ones. It's very sad, really. :-D

"Hey, if you're talking movie!Arthur, I think not knowing a damn thing about Celtic culture or mythology or even knowing how to pronounce the word 'Celt' would be a motherfucking bonus."

Well, "don't know about" was meant to be my tactful indication of "can't be arsed to care." Ahem.

I'm far too incoherent to give out an address of any kind (unless it's my own to people wanting to give me huge, sticky wads of hard cash) but if I did attempt one, it'd look a little like this:

the view here is so SPARKLY!11!!!! and, um, stuff.

so, in lieu of that, I'll just point to yours and say-- what she said :)

*snog!!*

[identity profile] trumpeterofdoom.livejournal.com 2004-09-02 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
dude, you make me want to make my own address.

amen to all the AUs.

not much else to say, but yes, yes, and YES to all you've said in this post about popslash. just. yes.

Excellent. It makes me feel all useful and smrt when people agree with what I've said! Especially when it has to do with my beloved AU's, which, really...I don't see how people *don't* like them. They're so much fun when they're well done, and this fandome sure as hell knows how to do them!
