the kid's not turning tricks for nothing

I'm listening to the soundtrack for The Mod Squad. I don't remember a damn thing about that movie, but it sure has a good soundtrack. Even better because I bought it for a dollar ninety-nine at A&B because the case was damaged, or something. mmmmm, cheap music.

Last night I watched a documentary called Inside Boystown, about the male prostitution trade in Vancouver's yuppie Yaletown district. The subject material was interesting, and the people they interviewed were articulate, but overall it was kind of flat. There wasn't much in the way of title graphics, plus it used that god-awful synthesised drum-set track that every single documentary seems to adore. Plus they made the guys interviewed spray-paint a big mural about what they thought prostitution was like, and y'know, that kind of thing is just not necessary. The mural wasn't even outside. All in all, I've seen better documentaries and I would've been disappointed if I hadn't rented it for free.

In fandom-related news, [livejournal.com profile] torchthisnow provided a link to some really adorable pictures of three of the OC kids getting plastered at Rock the Vote. Well, only two of them are plastered. Rachel Bilson isn't, in addition to being adorable. If she and Mila Kunis were ever in a show together, I would implode from how cute they both are.

Gilmore Girls icon, because last night's episode was interesting even if I resent Jason for making me like him. Dammit!

Ha, I remember that. Louise Walker made that flick (she's in my Women in Film Group). We did some dubbing or something for that when I worked at carousel.

It's not that great - it's kind of slow - but the people in it made up for the tempo. I never understood the mural thing, either.

Hee! I was wondering if you'd worked on it or not. And yes -- the people they chose to interview were really well-spoken and engaging, but the music! And the mural! I think the total of well-done murals I've seen in my life has been, oh...*one*.

hah. i remember it, they ran it on Global I think, some months ago and when they first showed the trailers I was all, ohhh ahhh must watch. But then when I did tune in, i found myself channel surfing; I hate it when it happens. And it's like you said, the people were articulate and seemingly no bullshit sincere, but the movie just didn't jell together.

It wasn't bad, but to be honest, I can't remember a thing, which means to say that nothing really *got* to me...and I think it should, any good documentary should cut inside on some level, because this is it, this is real, it resonates, ya know?

If I had to pick an analogy, I’d say that I have very similar expectations for books and documentaries, they should sink hooks into me, make me react on the spot.

Regular movies get some leeway because it’s a visual of something and the visual tends to sidetrack your mind, make you too wrapped up in the actual watching, to really process what you’re seeing. You’re basically too busy watching to let your mind work, it comes later if the movie was good, and reaction is an aftermath of sorts.

That's exactly it. I watched it, I understood what they were saying and was even genuinely interested in the people, but nothing really made me *feel* anything much. I didn't take away any sort of thoughtfulness from the documentary; I remember it well enough, but dispassionately. So I guess while the documentary might have enlightened, it didn't do much to make me empathize, y'know?

A friend of mine used to work at an animation studio right in that block, though, and she'd tell us about the poor wee things who'd be out there sometimes in the cold. Now *that* was sad.

OC-related: do you have your recaps of the show memoried at all? now the series is actually screening here, I'd love to read them.(did you do them right from the first show, or partway through the series?) I read one before I'd even seen the show and it amused me, so I'm guessing they'll amuse me even more now I actually know who the hell you're talking about ;)

I do indeed have them memoried (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=stubbleglitter&keyword=the+oc&filter=all)! I only started watching the show and recapping halfway through, so there's seven recaps up to date. Maybe someday if I'm intensely bored I'll start from the beginning, since I've downloaded them, but for now it's just those.

And, yaaaaay! I'm glad you're in on the fun, crazy, occasionally plain stupid world of the OC. It's so addictive. *g*

cool-- thank you :) I tried the recaps at TWoP, but the reviewer wasn't nearly snarky enough for my liking :)

and I admit, I'm hopelessly hooked. I watched the first show with an open mind, but I hadn't counted on Adam Brody being so damn weird and charming.

off to read! :)
