you're unfunny and untalented -- that's why you're perfect for drama!

I need to keep away from the Kino website, because there are so! many! moovies! that all look so good. Like:

Fallen Angels -- includes a storyline about a boy who stopped speaking after eating a tin of pineapple that was past its expiry date

Sebastiane -- by the same director as Caravaggio, homoerotic and with a score by Brian Eno

Tales from the Gimli Hospital -- it's Canadian and therefore explores the themes dear to our hearts; isolation, aborted passion, secrets, and necrophilia

The Brothers Quay Collection -- freaky stop-motion done by identical twins about the dreamscapes of repressed childhood memories

And there's a new one that's not up on the website but is in the catalogue they sent me, called Junk Food: "In the course of twenty-four hours, a cross-section of today's Tokyo -- including a white-collar junkie, a homesick Mexican wrestler, and a murderous Pakistani -- is followed in a calorie rush of vignettes spooned down with a blend of Japanese techno, Latin hip-hop, and Iranian disco." Have you ever heard anything more wonderful?!? I need to be rich so I can buy all this stuff.

Guy Maddin! I worship him. You have to see Saddest Music in the World when it comes to video. It's quintessential.

And the Brothers Quay are amazing as well. They even have a commercial for weed killer that's just beautiful.

I wish it was easier to get my hands on films like this, man. As it is I have to go visit knobbly little out-of-the-way video stores, and they're almost always out. Arrgh!

That's the first time I've heard of the Brothers Quay; they and the Gimli Hospital sound fascinating.

Whoot! I never thought I'd see the day when my friends list was talking about Guy Maddin. It warms the heart.

Hee! I've been feeling particularly patriotic as of late. Do you think we're all genetically encoded for it to kick in at some point in life?

I think it's definitely hardcoded, man. Plus, I am in Winnipeg, and GUY MADDIN. *ahem* (We're such a big small town sometimes, and I was a film minor, so I know about a billion people who work with him regularly, including a number of my professors and my best friend's dentist.)

Brother Quay gave me horrific nightmares my freshman year of college! *shudders* Creepy as sin. But interesting, for sure.

Your subject line. They said that in the Futurama episode that I watched last night!! Caught my eye, uh huh.

"Creepy as sin" sounds like just the sort of thing I like. Nightmares will follow, to be sure, since I am a total chickenshit, but -- that's half the fun, innit? *g*

And, hooray for Futurama! That episode's so good, what with Uncle Zoid and Calculon's acting and the Oscars. Hee!

The Brothers Quay rule.
Guy Maddin rules more.
Guy Maddin is a God.
Anything that Guy Maddin makes is worth seeing, and then worth seeing again.
Favorite Guy Maddin film: Careful (set in a school for butlers in the highest Alps; possibly includes twincest, I can't exactly recall, but certain includes twins and some Cronenberg-level squickiness, although it's actually a screamingly funny comedy)

Oooh! I read about Careful in weird sex and snowshoes (http://www.raintaxi.com/online/2002winter/monk.shtml); they have to be very quiet so as not to set off any avalanches, right? It sounds fascinating and odd and wonderful and now I really do have to start scouting Vancouver's more esoteric video stores to see if I can find some of these. It seems that the mainstream video stores won't carry Canadian-made films if they don't somehow involve Molly Parker or Callum Keith Rennie. *g*
