i'll see you in hell, candy boy!!
Have sufficiently recovered from earlier food-related post. ahem.
Since my home computer is broken, I decided to read Swordspoint. I read it straight through, and...was I supposed to hate Alec? Because I sure as hell did. I kept rooting for St. Vier to get with Michael, dammit! Sigh. It's so hard to find good fantasy novels nowadays. Of course, my expectations may have raised a bit from the good ol' Tanis and Laurana phase of youth, but, y'know. Tonight, perhaps I'll crack open The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, see what that's like.
I've finished the bike messenger book, The Immortal Class, and it was pretty good. There's nothing that will stick with me until the end of my live, but it was a fast-paced visceral read nontheless. I didn't care too much for the moments where he dwelled on his personal life -- knowing about his parents didn't make me any more engaged in the narrative -- but his accounts of braving traffic and snotty suits are great. Not that I need any excuse to despise stuck-up admin types, but damn, it sure feels good when somebody else is spitting out hatred about the bastards.
And now for something completely

don't ask me where he is or why they're letting Chris stir the candy; all I know is that I love those shows on the Food Network that take you inside candy factories, so I can see the appeal. mmmmmm, candy Chris....

I was trying to send you that chain letter about different categories of friends and why and how they are important and valuable, but I'll just tell you right here instead that you've meant a lot to me, with your letters, stories and encouraging comments.
You know, in The Fall of the Kings the characters are even less likeable. Did you read that one?

Also: You're always so wonderful to talk to and read and admire, sweetie. Getting mail and comments from you always makes me so happy, and you're *so* on my list of Underappreciated Writers because I love love love the stark clarity of your writing and I think everybody should. Thank you a hundred times over for everything. *snug*
I have not read The Fall of the Kings, and after your...er...stellar recommendation, I don't think I shall. *g*

I also just finished The Immortal Class... I agree that while it's nothing profound to my life, it was a good read.

All those stories about the bitchy office building denizens were harrowing, man. Who knew bike couriers were considered such third-class citizens?

Also... Kavalier and Clay rocks. I can not recommend it enough.

Whoa! you did? No see, now there's no chance in hell you can just leave it like that! You gotta tell me why? (see what you've done to my punctuation?!)
Like, how can you hate the boy who treats people as if they were flies and butterflies and he's got a lot of pins. Or Richard's got a lot of pins, rather. And Alec is all giddy to watch him kill for his amusement. And Richard sighs perplexedly, but totally goes to show 'em that, this boy is, of course, a total nut, but he's his crazy, so hands off, motherfuckers.
So talk to me, man! I wanna know why!!!!
Oh and btw, i for all my love for Swordspoint, I hated The Fall of the Kings with a fiery passion, so i wouldn't bother unless you had nothing better to do and the book was free.
ditto
The Fall of Kings, however, pretty much sucks. I read it after much anticipation, only to end up very disappointed. skip it and read the Flewelling books instead, if you haven't already.

He didn't feel developed enough for me to like him; he mostly seemed like a spoiled, melodramatic brat, one of those tiresome people who has all the privileges and riches and throws them away in order to lecture others on how evil being priviledged and rich is.
The characters on a whole didn't feel as rounded as I normally like them. Richard and Alec were both kind of pale and alike, and I like my characters painted in broader strokes. Michael, I adored, but he was frustrating because I wanted more of thim than there was in the book. *g*
The politics were good, though. I enjoyed all the deceit and maneuvering and subtleties.

Now that's the kind of fucking review I love! hah!
My Battle Cry?
That's it!!!!
I want to start campaigning to have Chris Kirkpatrick take over hosting duties of "Unwrapped"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you with me lads?!!!!!!!!

OMFG you're brilliant! Chris as Wonka, and Justin as Charlie, and JC can be Veruca Salt, Joey can be Mike Teavee and Lance as Violet Beauregarde, and the Veal can be Augustus Gloop! Oh, and O-town as the Oompa-Loompas. But it would have to be the book version, because the Gene Wilder movie is just terrifying.
Oh, I lurve you. You're an Everlasting Gobstopper of Delight.

Expect a fairly longish email at some point this weekend on this topic. I think I came at it with a slightly different viewpoint. That said, I enjoyed both books, although the second has a distinctly different flavor to it.
