I agree. I read an incredibly well written, well researched and sensitive fic that in a plausible, non-AU way, sent the main character to Poland in 1943. I was hesitant to read it at first, because I used to think that RL tragedy should be left alone.
But her fic (though needed some editing) was powerful and important and I'm glad to have read it. It was as effective in describing an accurate picture of the Holocaust as some memoirs I'd read for school, or what I had seen at the Jewish museum in Berlin. (The author in fact has an extensive bibliography.) But that is a far cry from this, in so many ways.
