a dervish of declension and conjurer of conjugation

I am at this point right now in French where I resent everything -- I resent UBC for making me take a stupid 2-year language requirement to graduate, I resent my stupid class being at 7 pm on a Tuesday out on the other side of god's country, I resent having to drag myself back and forth between there and home and work with gas and parking being so expensive.

I am, dear friendslist, at the point where the other night while biting my nails and counting down to when I had to leave for class, I thought, maybe i don't even *care* if i fail this class and I was filled with such utter whole-body relief that I honestly think I'm just going to ... not go for the rest of the semester. Fortunately it's one of those pass/fail dealies that doesn't affect your GPA, so, y'know, just fuck it. I'll try over the summer to get this language requirement waived or some shit, goddammit I'm a "mature student", they should be able to fuckin' grandfather me in or some jazz like that.

... whew. That felt really good to get off my chest. *g*

I have meanwhile been watching a lot of fun garbage tv like Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars and Justified and Young Justice and Glee and Kanye West videos, eating incredible food ever since I discovered Groupon, trying to wear mascara for the first time in my life, and punking around on the Media Education Foundation website. Their videos are SUPER-expensive, but I discovered that you can read transcripts of them! Which is really excellent. Right now I'm in the middle of I Am A Man: Black Masculinity in America and learning stuff that I'm a lot more interested in than fucking French (no offence, Francophones).

I am a terrible lurker most of the time, but I just wanted to say that you can watch all of MEF's stuff online if you scroll down past the trailer and click on "view a full length preview." But it does have FOR PREVIEW ONLY superimposed for the whole thing.

Still, I have to put my summer at MEF to good use sometimes. :D

I took French all through high school and signed up for first year French at university. Wow, not even. I dropped that course after two days of not understanding a word my prof said and took Dutch 101 instead.

You have made a wise and emotionally healthy decision, IMHO.

heh, i feel this. i was up a creek due to language requirements. in the end, the 2-in-1 german course i took (that i took after they wrongly placed me in an upper-level spanish class) tanked my whole gpa.

I'm a terrible lurker too, but as a UBC alumna, out on the other side of god's country made me laugh and cringe in sympathy. UBC campus is lovely, but man it is REMOTE compared to universities in other major cities (McGill, UofT etc). Being right on the edge of the ocean with a huge forest between you and the rest of town is all fine and good when you live on campus, but when you have to get to class from OFF campus it's kind of ridiculous. And parking is even more ridiculous, from what I understand, although I don't own a car so I never had to suffer that part of it...just the looooong bus ride there and back.

So...I hear ya. ;)

Oh wow, yes, coming from Richmond and Surrey would be an epic journey no matter how you do it (car, bus etc.). You have my sympathy even MORE. :) I mostly had to do the trip from downtown, back when I was still going to campus regularly, and even though the bus service is pretty good, it still took me an hour each way. Blargh. Why has teleportation not been invented yet?!

I only have two comments on ubc's language requirements: they've, uh, always had the req to have a language 200, and if they do exempt you, keep that email/piece of scrap paper like a mofo, because arts advising will promptly lose that fucked. Um. Not that I had to be exempted from English 101 or anything.

And Latin has no spoken requirement, and the summer 100 session is taught often in 6 weeks by Charmaine gorrie, who is awesome. (I have heard people say otherwise but they are clearly wrong.)

Okay, three things.
